$10,000 Designer Shopping Spree!!!

It’s a yearly adrenaline rush. As much as I hate to see the end of summer barbecues and beach days, the anticipation of fall gives me a jolt of excitement that rivals any 4^th of July fireworks display. That’s right, although I’ll miss the flirty sundresses and flip-flop friendly days of summer, they’re no competition for the rich hues and weighty fabrics of fall designer fashions. After all, there’s a reason why the September issue is the centerpiece publication for every fashion magazine. This is the time when fashion is at its finest. So, while my male cohorts are enjoying a little friendly competition in their fantasy football leagues, I thought, “Why not partake in a seasonable sport of my own with some fantasy shopping?” So, armed with a $10,000 budget but limitless enthusiasm, I set out on a fantasy designer fashion shopping spree to three of my favorite fashion retailers: Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Barney's. First stop: Neiman’s!

As I walk into what can only be described as high fashion nirvana, I can’t help but think, “What better way to welcome the cooler temperatures than with a spectacular coat?” And the selection at Neiman Marcus is positively lustworthy! With so many lavish fabrics and designer styles to choose from, it’s hard to pick just one. However, it is Armani, one of the most prestigious names in fashion, who tops my most-wanted list this year with the super-chic winter wool coat shown below.

Made in Italy of angora, wool and cashmere, this designer coat from Neiman Marcus’ Armani Collezioni collection, features an ultra-feminine a-line skirt, slit pockets and a removable rabbit fur collar. My fave element though is the oh-so-chic waist-defining belt. For a stunning investment piece like this, I’ll happily pay the $3,315 pricetag. It is fantasy money after all! ;-)

Whew – that was a pretty big chunk of change, worth every penny of course! Still, I don’t want to get carried away. If I want my stay in fantasy land to extend beyond five minutes, my next item should be a bit more budget-friendly. Oooh – I’ve found the perfect pick in the form of one of this season’s must-haves: the vest. I love the casual, slightly structured version from La Rok shown below

I would wear this buttoned or open with my fave skinny jeans. And the sequined tank looks fabulous with it! Metallics are so hot right now. This would make a great Saturday night look -- I should really pick the tank up too. Wait a minute – the tank is attached?! This is almost too good to be true. At $278, this vest-tank combo is definitely a stylish steal. Sold!

Okay, since life isn’t all play, I should probably find something for the office. Time to look for some suiting! I have to confess, I’m a “suitaholic.” An impeccably tailored business suit gives me an instant confidence boost like no other item can. And this fall’s geometric silhouettes are more exciting than ever. My ultimate pick though is the structured couture jacket by Aquilano Rimondi shown below.

In a season that’s all about the bold shoulder, Rimondi serves up an unexpected chic with voluminous three-quarter sleeves and detailed folded cuffs. Made in Italy, this Black wool designer jacket features a notched collar, hidden front closure and front slit pockets. At $1,555, it’s going to put a dent in my pocketbook, but that’s a-okay with me. I love it!!

I’m not usually one to veer far from my fashion comfort zone. However, I’m in the rare mood for a little risk-taking today, so I think I’ll check out a trend that’s been at the top of every must-have list for fall. That’s right my fellow fashionistas – I’m going to open my mind (and my wallet) to leggings! Looking at the diverse selection, it’s clear that the designer versions of today are much more sophisticated than the ones that I remember from the 80s. I see all kinds of uber-chic styles in leather, snakeskin and even lace, but I don’t think I’m quite ready to take that much of a fashion plunge. (Maybe next year!) Instead, I’ll go for the luxe comfort of Donna Karen’s cashmere version shown here.

Although they’re also available in Light Grey, I’ll opt for classic Black. At $495, they may not be the most budget-conscious interpretation of the trend, but I’ll bet that they’re the most comfortable. After all, they’re a combination of two of my favorite things: cashmere and stretch! Plus, who knows more about fit and flattery than Donna Karen? I’ll trust her designs every time!

Uh-oh. I’ve already spent half my budget and I’ve only been in one store! Okay, time to head to Bergies. As hard as it is to pull myself away from Neiman Marcus, I know that the fashionable finds at BG will be just as enticing!

My first stop at Bergies is the cocktail and evening section. I have a few dinner parties coming up, and I’d love to treat myself to something new that’s sophisticated without being too formal. Wow – that didn’t take long. One look at Heidi Weisel’s off-the-shoulder sweater and silk crepe pant ensemble below and I’m sold. The flowing Black silk pants are the

epitome of modern elegance. But it’s the pure silk chiffon lining that gives them major strut appeal. Paired with the off-the-shoulder cashmere and nylon fitted sweater, this perfectly put-together look is both sleek and slightly seductive. I also love the ease and versatility of separates. I’ll definitely wear the sweater with other pants and jeans. The fitted shape will contrast beautifully with a slouchy bottom to create a sharp silhouette. At $1265 for the pant and $585 for the sweater, they may not be the most cost-effective choices, but they’re just too tempting to resist. I can’t wait to wear them!

The next item for my shopping bag is destined to be one of my go-to pieces this season. Just one look at Autumn Cashmere’s Dark Grey cashmere hoodie shown below and I know that I’ll want to live in it!

I love the fact that the cowl collar can also be worn as a hood. And what could be more inviting on a cold winter day than the comfort of being draped in sumptuous cashmere? At $396, this is definitely a must-have!

Yikes! My budget is dwindling and I haven’t even looked at shoes yet! Time to hit Barneys New York for some fabulous footwear before the best finds of the season are gone.

Since my apparel choices haven’t been overly wild, I think I’ll release my inner diva through footwear. And my first choice is definitely a scene-stealer. The shoe bootie is one of the hottest items this season, and Christian Louboutin kicks up the style quotient with the black lace platform shown below

The Clic Clac Black bootie gets its “wow!” factor from sultry lace detailing and a 4’ 7/10” platform heel that is truly runway-worthy. This attention-grabber is made all the more interesting by the juxtaposition of the black lace, a nighttime staple, against suede, a material traditionally reserved for daytime looks. I also love the added embellishment of the button and loop closure and, of course, the signature Loubouton Red leather sole. Made in Italy, this statement bootie is $1,045. I can’t wait to wear this designer shoe. It will bring instant chic to any outfit!

Also from Christian Loubouton, the Josefa sandal shown below manages to encompass three huge trends – the peep-toe, platforms and metallics – without looking over-the-top. The suede-covered platform is an elegant show-stopper with its metallic leather criss-cross detailing. Although I love the dramatic contrast of Black and Gold, I also covet this showstopper in its two other incarnations: Pewter and Nude. At $1,025 a pair though, I can only afford one. So, in the interest of making a dramatic entrance (and exit!), the Black and Gold it is!

Oh no. I only have $41 dollars left and I feel like I’m just getting started! I suppose I could hit the sale sections and try to find a fun knock-off of one of the season’s must-have accessories like an oversize cocktail ring. On second thought, maybe I’ll save the balance for my next fantasy shopping spree. I could definitely put it toward any number of designer finds. Now if only my fantasy money were accepted at Neiman’s, Bergies and Barney’s. (Sigh) Still, real or not, I’ve had a blast. The guys may not agree, but I think this beats fantasy football any day! :-)

While stars like Eva Longoria Parker, Anne Hathaway and Drew Barrymore have been sporting glam versions of the trend on the red carpet, you don’t need to be a Hollywood A-lister to enjoy this super-chic look. I like the boho feel of the Milly water-stripe dress shown below.

The 4^th of July is just around the corner, so why not show your all-American pride with some red, white and blue? One of my favorite looks from this BG sale is the Dolce & Gabbana beaded tank and ruffle skirt shown below.

This gorgeous red tank is made of mercerized cotton and features pearl-bead detail at its gathered neckline. At the back, a criss-cross bow adds an element of surprise. A true multi-tasker, it would work under a tailored suit at the office or on its own with anything from jeans to tuxedo pants. It has a back closure and is now on sale for $177, down from its original price of $295.

Bringing a flirtatious touch to the look, the accompanying D&G ruffle skirt features a red, white and navy abstract print. Made of cotton with a pleated front, it has a ruffled silk hem. Don’t the Dolce & Gabbana red tank and the D&G ruffle skirt pair up so nicely for that super-chic look.

Who needs fireworks when you can set off sparks of your own in this striking, color-block sheath? Red and navy, it has a white patent leather belt with white stud detail at the natural waist. Year after year, one of my go-to summer looks is a stylish halter. And one of the most covet-worthy this summer comes from Diane von Furstenberg. The famed designer’s bamboo halter scarf features a multicolor abstract print. It is available in both red and lilac shown below. Made in Italy of pure silk, it was originally $215 but is now on sale at BG for $140. DVF, I love it!

The asymmetric look has never been hotter. The trend has been seen on everyone from celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe to First Lady Michelle Obama who opted for the now-famous Jason Wu single-shoulder gown at this year’s inaugural galas. For anyone looking to try out the one-shoulder look, BG offers plenty of designer choices.

And now for that special night out, the Stella McCartney asymmetric dress, shown below, is an elegant option that would be hard to pass. This marine blue design is satin with gathered bow detail at the shoulder. The soft silhouette is also flattering to all figure types. Made in Italy, it was originally $1,395 and is now marked down to $837. Buy it now and wear it on the festive party circuit this holiday season.

 

For a more casual and affordable version of the asymmetric trend, I like the Roberto Rodriguez lemoncello tee, shown below. This cotton / spandex t-shirt has a high-fashion feel thanks to its stylish dolman sleeves and bow detailing at the shoulder. Originally $231, it’s on sale now marked down to $150.

One of the biggest fashion stories this year has been the return of the jumpsuit. Stella McCartney takes on the trend with the voluminous black silk version shown below. There’s nothing conservative about this backless, wide-legged design, so be prepared to turn some heads! Made in Italy, it has a halter neckline and is on sale at Bergies for $897, down from the original price of $1,495.

Also from Stella McCartney, the jersey top shown below exudes an unexpected elegance. With its sweetheart mesh neckline, this designer piece represents sexy sophistication at its best. It features a darted seam and is made in Italy of viscose / polyamide / elastane. A true multi-tasker, this top would work under a blazer or by itself with a pair of skinny jeans or wide-legged pants. Originally $665, it has been reduced to $399.

One of the hottest trends this season is the boyfriend look and there’s a number of pieces in BG’s apparel sale collections that you can choose from. For example, Stella McCartney offers a sophisticated take on this trend with the ice pink boyfriend shirt shown below.

From Elizabeth and James, the designer line by style icons Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, I love the ruched bust and empire waist on the black cotton cabana designer dress shown below. Originally $345, it is on sale at BG for $173.

Finally, no fashion post would be complete without mention of one of this year’s most polarizing trends. Love it or hate it, the harem pant is definitely back. Lately, it’s been seen on celebs from Jennifer Hudson to Angie Harmon and Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas. Don’t worry though: The Robert Rodriguez version shown below is far removed from MC Hammer’s famous gold lame style statement of the 90s.

This modern interpretation of the look is made of polyester / spandex and features a tie-belt at the natural waist, side slash pockets, gathered cropped legs, and a pleated front. Originally $297, this hot designer look is on sale marked down to $178.

Sex and the City (SATC) Movie Sequel: Spoilers and Speculation (May 2009)

Since news of the Sex and the City (SATC) movie sequel was confirmed last summer, the media has been abuzz with rumored plot leaks, casting news and behind-the-scenes gossip that can’t help but raise an eyebrow or two. (Did Vivienne Westwood really say that she wants to write the sequel?)

Now, with filming set to start in New York and London this September, we at ChicAlert are going to try to sort the fact from the fiction, all while asking the burning questions that are sure to be of interest to Sex and the City and SATC fashion-loving fans.

From now until the sequel hits movie theatres worldwide on May 28, 2010, ChicAlert will be posting regular updates on all-things “Sex.” So, slip off your Manolos, grab a Cosmo, and share your thoughts on everything from spoilers to styling. First on the agenda, let’s take a look at what we know so far.

Sex and the City (SATC) Movie Sequel - Casting:

After much “will he or won’t he?” speculation, Chris Noth has confirmed that he will reprise his role of Mr. Big. This is welcome news since I know most will agree that it would be virtually impossible to imagine the SATC movie sequel without Chris Noth. He joins other male love interests Evan Handler (Harry Goldenblatt) and David Eigenberg (Steve Brady) who had already signed on.

As for the men in Samantha Jones’ (Kim Cattrall’s) life, it looks like we might not have seen the last of hunky actor-model Smith Jerrod played by Jason Lewis. In a recent interview with PopSugar, Lewis said, (There’s) a good chance, yeah,” when asked if he would be reprising the SATC role. Although Samantha had ended her five-year relationship with Smith in the original SATC movie so that she could refocus her life on herself, his statement has fuelled rumors that Samantha and Smith may in fact reunite in the SATC sequel. After all, Samantha didn’t actually stop loving Smith. She just realized that she needed to rediscover her identity outside the relationship – this time not as Smith’s agent or as Smith’s girlfriend, but as herself: Samantha Jones. Indeed, who can forget her heartfelt proclamation, “I’ve been in a relationship with myself for 49 years and that’s the one I want to work on.”

Dancing with the Stars first-place runner-up Gilles Marini has also gone on record as saying that he would love to reprise his SATC role as Samantha’s sexy neighbor, Dante. He told Britain’s OK! magazine, “There's a lot of talks. I’m not sure what’s going on yet. Only (writer and director) Michael Patrick King will tell me the future in a phone call - 'What about this?' And whatever he says, I will say, 'What about yes!'”

According to OK! Magazine, Marini, who also confirmed that he has landed a role in next season’s Brothers & Sisters, said that he would welcome the opportunity to explore Dante’s personality.

“I owe the movie a lot, and I know there’s much more to the character to show to the people and we saw one side. We’ll see another and whatever he writes, if I am or not, I’m super proud to have been working with him. (King).”

Sex and the City (SATC) Movie Sequel - Plot:

Not surprisingly, writer and director Michael Patrick King has been mum about specific plotlines for the SATC movie sequel, although he did hint earlier this year that we won’t see a repeat of the gut-wrenching drama that we experienced in the first Sex and the City movie when Carrie Bradshaw was left at the alter. “In the last SATC movie, I thought (the fans) wanted to see an epic and violently tragic love story, and drama, but I don’t think you go to that candy store twice,” King said at a Writers Guild Foundation panel discussion in L.A. on January 29, 2009. “You can’t try to do what you did already, so you come up with a different tone that you like.”

As recently as this May, Kristen Davis (Charlotte) seemed to echo this same sentiment. At Modern Bride’s 25 Trendsetters of 2009 at NYC's Palace Hotel, Davis told Usmagazine.com reporters,

“I know some general ideas for the overall, and it's very exciting and very, very different than the first one -- which is the luxury of getting to do another one, you know?...We did the first one and those were kind of our pent-up things that we hadn't finished in the show or whatever," she says, "and now, we're just starting fresh in a way, which is just really exciting and -- it's just a new adventure!”

Davis also went on to say she “thinks” that the current recession will be incorporated into the plot.

“If you think about the show, we always tried to write what was happening," she said. “It’s not like we tried to pretend 9/11 didn't happen. That would just be crazy…And that's I think part of what worked about the show. It wasn't just about relationships and romantic things…It was about our lives and the things that influence our lives. I imagine -- I'm trying not to say anything -- Michael Patrick would want to put in someone being affected by the recession."

Indeed, the recession angle has been the subject of unconfirmed rumors for months. Even Sarah Jessica Parker has stated that the SATC movie sequel will be mindful of the current economic climate. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Parker said,

“There is a lot that we have to think about because times are very different. So these are nice challenges, these are good challenges... How do we do that well? And how do we do that in a not lazy way? How do we address these economic times in a franchise that has a lot to do with luxury and labels?"

Sex and the City (SATC) Movie Sequel – Spoilers:

Sifting through the plethora of SATC movie spoiler reports online, a few supposed “leaks” come up again and again. The most frequently mentioned is that Mr. Big will lose his millions as a result of the economic downturn and will subsequently have to relocate to London where he lives under far more modest circumstances. Once there, he cheats on Carrie but then confesses everything to her, prompting her to head to London to confront him in-person. It is at that point that Carrie finds out that she is in fact pregnant.

Also on the recession front, rumors abound that Samantha will fall upon hard times and lose her investments. The fashion-forward diva then finds herself struggling to maintain her fashionista image while living within a tight budget.

Sex and the City (SATC) Movie Sequel – Questions Raised:

If there’s any truth to these spoilers, then they raise some interesting questions about the SATC movie sequel:

To what extent would the recession plotline impact the fashion that we will see onscreen? After all, Carrie and company already have closets full of luxury designer clothing and designer shoes, not to mention the designer handbags and designer jewelry, so it’s not like any of them would have to start wearing Wal-Mart finds exclusively.  Longtime viewers of the HBO Sex and the City series will also recall that the show wasn't dominated by high-end designer labels at the outset. It seemed as though Carrie Bradshaw achieved her unique look by mixing vintage and thrift store finds with whatever high-end fashion items she could swing. As the show evolved, so too did the wardrobes, arguably rendering the luxury fashion designer labels and over-the-top looks almost as important as the characters themselves.

So, what a great opportunity to showcase Carrie’s trademark creativity at a new level. After all, who better to represent the frugal SATC fashionista by mixing eclectic vintage pieces with the designer labels that she currently owns?

Other questions of the SATC movie sequel that spring to mind are:

If the Sex and the City movie sequel is split between the two fashion capitals will we see a marked contrast between London and New York fashion and style?

If Carrie does in fact have a baby, can we expect to see a “make-under” as she has less time to devote to herself?  We already know from the first SATC movie that SJP had no problem appearing without make-up on-screen (and she still looked beautiful!), so will fashion take a backseat to the pressures of first-time motherhood?

How would a financial crisis affect Mr Big or Samantha beyond simple dollars and cents? Would it affect their self-esteem? Relationships? How much of their self-image has been tied to material things and will they now become more introspective as a result?

One thing is for sure: with Patricia Field once again signed on for the SATC movie sequel, the fashion will never be boring. Recession or not, Patricia Field knows how to bring a whimsical aesthetic like no one else. With her penchant for mismatched pieces and larger-than-life accoutrements (Remember Carrie’s deadpan admission, “I wore a bird on my head,” in the wedding fiasco aftermath?), Field’s choices should more than quench the summer thirst of style-seeking fans.
